What is your current role at VinPro?
What qualifications do you bring to VinPro?
A Masters Degree in Viticulture, following a Post Grad Diploma in Oenology and Viticulture (Lincoln).
Where did you come from before VinPro?
I was viticulturist at Akarua for nine and a half years, I have been working in the industry since 1998.
What made you want to get into the wine industry?
Redundancy from Palmerston North City Council as a result of restructuring made me review my career choices and wine combined two of my main interests – horticulture and wine drinking!
What does your role entail on a daily basis?
Testing the wine pre-bottling and bottles as they come off the bottling line to ensure quality.
Why do you love working in the wine industry?
It is an industry that requires passion and has a great ‘end result’ – what can be better than sharing a bottle of good wine and dinner with friends? I really enjoy viticulture, grapevines are fascinating plants that respond to good management and every season is different which is then reflected in the wine.
What are some of the top projects you been a part of in the industry?
Developing and improving vineyards in Gisborne (Wi Pere Trust), Hawkes Bay (Sacred Hill) and Central Otago (Akarua). Every region, and indeed every vineyard, has its own unique challenges and I enjoy problem solving.
What are your interests outside of work?
- Good food and wine
- Growing things.
